These little birds show up at every bird-feeder I've ever loaded, north and south. And they've baffled me, I should be ashamed to admit, more than once.
Flipping through the book, muttering: scarlet-headed seed-snatcher, rosy-knobbed chirper, raspberry-flavored song sparrow...Then, there it is, again, House Finch.

I need to put you in touch with a blog pal of mine (main interests are classic bicycling and bird watching). Gunnar insists that there's a huge difference between being a "birder" and being a "bird watcher". He falls among the later and although suffering along with deteriorating eyesight, and equipped with a low end camera (as opposed to an expensive monster with lens out to "here", he and his wife manage to capture some wonderful shots of birds both common and rare. Along with an annual trip to coastal south Texas (I suspect mostly to escape the long Minnesota winters), he occasionally takes one on a philosophical journey and from time to time offers up musical selections. Try it--you just might like it: http://oakwoodlife.blogspot.com/
